    Automated Building Information Extraction and Evaluation from High-resolution Remotely Sensed Data

    The two-dimensional (2D) footprints and three-dimensional (3D) structures of buildings are of great importance to city planning, natural disaster management, and virtual environmental simulation. As traditional manual methodologies for collecting 2D and 3D building information are often both time consuming and costly, automated methods are required for efficient large area mapping. It is challenging to extract building information from remotely sensed data, considering the complex nature of urban environments and their associated intricate building structures. Most 2D evaluation methods are focused on classification accuracy, while other dimensions of extraction accuracy are ignored. To assess 2D building extraction methods, a multi-criteria evaluation system has been designed. The proposed system consists of matched rate, shape similarity, and positional accuracy. Experimentation with four methods demonstrates that the proposed multi-criteria system is more comprehensive and effective, in comparison with traditional accuracy assessment metrics. Building height is critical for building 3D structure extraction. As data sources for height estimation, digital surface models (DSMs) that are derived from stereo images using existing software typically provide low accuracy results in terms of rooftop elevations. Therefore, a new image matching method is proposed by adding building footprint maps as constraints. Validation demonstrates that the proposed matching method can estimate building rooftop elevation with one third of the error encountered when using current commercial software. With an ideal input DSM, building height can be estimated by the elevation contrast inside and outside a building footprint. However, occlusions and shadows cause indistinct building edges in the DSMs generated from stereo images. Therefore, a “building-ground elevation difference model” (EDM) has been designed, which describes the trend of the elevation difference between a building and its neighbours, in order to find elevation values at bare ground. Experiments using this novel approach report that estimated building height with 1.5m residual, which out-performs conventional filtering methods. Finally, 3D buildings are digitally reconstructed and evaluated. Current 3D evaluation methods did not present the difference between 2D and 3D evaluation methods well; traditionally, wall accuracy is ignored. To address these problems, this thesis designs an evaluation system with three components: volume, surface, and point. As such, the resultant multi-criteria system provides an improved evaluation method for building reconstruction

    Consistent Multi-Mission Measures of Inland Water Algal Bloom Spatial Extent Using MERIS, MODIS and OLCI

    Envisat’s MERIS and its successor Sentinel OLCI have proven invaluable for documenting algal bloom conditions in coastal and inland waters. Observations over turbid eutrophic waters, in particular, have benefited from the band at 708 nm, which captures the reflectance peak associated with intense algal blooms and is key to line-height algorithms such as the Maximum Chlorophyll Index (MCI). With the MERIS mission ending in early 2012 and OLCI launched in 2016, however, time-series studies relying on these two sensors have to contend with an observation gap spanning four years. Alternate sensors, such as MODIS Aqua, offering neither the same spectral band configuration nor consistent spatial resolution, present challenges in ensuring continuity in derived bloom products. This study explores a neural network (NN) solution to fill the observation gap between MERIS and OLCI with MODIS Aqua data, delivering consistent algal bloom spatial extent products from 2002 to 2020 using these three sensors. With 14 bands of MODIS level 2 partially atmospherically corrected spectral reflectance as the NN input, the missing MERIS/OLCI band at 708 nm required for the MCI is simulated. The resulting NN-derived MODIS MCI (NNMCI) is shown to be in good agreement with MERIS and OLCI MCI in 2011 and 2017 respectively over the western basin of Lake Erie (R2 = 0.84, RMSE = 0.0032). To overcome the impact of MODIS sensor saturation over bright water targets, which otherwise renders pixels unusable for bloom detection using R-NIR wavebands, a variant NN model is employed which uses the 9 MODIS bands with the lowest probability of saturation to simulate the MCI. This variant NN predicts MCI with only a small increase in uncertainty (R2 = 0.73, RMSE = 0.005) allowing reliable estimates of bloom conditions in those previously unreported pixels. The NNMCI is shown to be robust when applied beyond the initial training dataset on Lake Erie, and when re-trained on different geographic areas (Lake Winnipeg and Lake of the Woods). Despite differences in spatial, temporal, and spectral resolution, MODIS algal bloom presence/absence was correctly classified in >92% of cases and bloom spatial extent derived within 25% uncertainty, allowing the application to the 2012–2015 time period to form a continuous and consistent multi-mission monitoring dataset from 2002 to 2020

    A Natural-Rule-Based-Connection (NRBC) Method for River Network Extraction from High-Resolution Imagery

    This study proposed a natural-rule-based-connection (NRBC) method to connect river segments after water body detection from remotely sensed imagery. A complete river network is important for many hydrological applications. While water body detection methods using remote sensing are well-developed, less attention has been paid to connect discontinuous river segments and form a complete river network. This study designed an automated NRBC method to extract a complete river network by connecting river segments at polygon level. With the assistance of an image pyramid, neighbouring river segments are connected based on four criteria: gap width (Tg), river direction consistency (Tθ), river width consistency (Tw), and minimum river segment length (Tl). The sensitivity of these four criteria were tested, analyzed, and proper criteria values were suggested using image scenes from two diverse river cases. The comparison of NRBC and the alternative morphological method demonstrated NRBC’s advantage of natural rule based selective connection. We refined a river centerline extraction method and show how it outperformed three other existing centerline extraction methods on the test sites. The extracted river polygons and centerlines have a multitude of end uses including rapidly mapping flood extents, monitoring surface water supply, and the provision of validation data for simulation models required for water quantity, quality and aquatic biota assessments.     The impacts of environmental variables on water reflectance measured using a lightweight unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based spectrometer system

    Remote sensing methods to study spatial and temporal changes in water quality using satellite or aerial imagery are limited by the inherently low reflectance signal of water across the visible and near infrared spectrum, as well as environmental variables such as surface scattering effects (sun glint), substrate and aquatic vegetation reflectance, and atmospheric effects. This study exploits the low altitude, high-resolution remote sensing capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms to examine the major environmental variables that affect water reflectance acquisition, without the confounding influence of atmospheric effects typical of higher-altitude platforms. After observation and analysis, we found: (1) multiple water spectra measured at the same location had a standard deviation of 10.4%; (2) water spectra changes associated with increasing altitude from 20 m to 100 m were negligible; (3) the difference between mean reflectance at three off-shore locations in an urban water body reached 29.9%; (4) water bottom visibility increased water reflectance by 20.1% in near shore areas compared to deep water spectra in a clear water lake; (5) emergent plants caused the water spectra to shift towards a shape that is characteristic of vegetation, whereas submerged vegetation showed limited effect on water spectra in the studied lake; (6) cloud and sun glint had major effects and caused water spectra to change abruptly; while glint and shadow effects on spectra may balance each other under certain conditions, the water reflectance can also be unpredictable at times due to wave effects and their effects on lines-of-site to calm water; (7) water spectra collected under a variety of different conditions (e.g. multiple locations, waves) resulted in weaker regression models compared to spectra collected under ideal conditions (e.g. single location, no wave), although the resulting model coefficients were relatively stable.
